While gable roof slopes from each side and meet at the ridge, the hip roof slopes from all four sides. It gives the appearance of a lid on a rectangular box. Hip roofs are costly to make because it needs more work, more materials and more manpower.
Gable roofs are still divided into Dutch gable, Gambrel roof etc. An inverted gable roof is named butterfly roof. Though there is no proof, some argue that hip roofs are stronger than the gable roofs, especially in hurricane regions. Flat roof are another choice. There are no decorations or slopes. The work is less and expense is also reduced.
Flat roofs that slope to one side are called shed roofs. It sits on two parallel walls. The height of one wall decides the angle of slope. Though there are a plethora of house roof types to select from, it is wise to select one that will go along with the region you live in. You must also consider the weather and the amount of money you can spend.
